Section 1

Executive Summary

This document records the accessibility and privacy compliance status of Grade 3 Math Practice, a progressive web application (PWA) designed for Tennessee TCAP 3rd-grade mathematics preparation. The application was assessed against WCAG 2.1 Level AA using both automated and manual methods. It was additionally reviewed for compliance with FERPA and COPPA privacy requirements.

The application returned zero accessibility violations across all tested views using axe-core 4.9.1. No student data is collected, transmitted, or stored outside the user's own device. The application is compliant with FERPA and COPPA by architectural design, not by policy alone.

Section 2

Privacy & Data Protection

Architecture

Grade 3 Math Practice is a fully client-side application. It has no backend server, no database, no user accounts, and no network requests that carry student data. All persistent state (student name/avatar, session scores, streaks, weekly topic selection) is stored exclusively in the browser's localStorage on the device where the app is used.

No data ever leaves the device. Disabling the device's internet connection after the initial page load has no effect on functionality. The application operates fully offline using a service worker cache.

FERPA Compliance

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) protects education records that identify individual students. Grade 3 Math Practice does not create education records as defined by FERPA:

Because no personally identifiable information is created or maintained in any institutional system, FERPA's consent and access requirements are not triggered.

COPPA Compliance

The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) applies to operators of websites and online services directed at children under 13 that collect personal information. Grade 3 Math Practice does not collect personal information from children:

COPPA compliance is achieved structurally: the app is designed so that no personal information from children is technically possible to collect or transmit.

Third-Party Services

ServicePurposeData Shared
NoneNo third-party services are integratedNone

The application loads no external scripts, fonts, stylesheets, or APIs. All assets are bundled and served from the same origin.

Section 3

WCAG 2.1 Level AA Conformance

Scope: This conformance claim covers the full interactive surface of the application: the welcome/profile screen, profile creation, home screen, weekly topic picker, active practice session (multiple choice and numeric entry question types), and the session results screen.

Key Accessibility Features

WCAG CriterionImplementationStatus
1.1.1 Non-text Content All SVG diagrams carry role="img" and aria-label. Decorative icons use aria-hidden="true". Math notation is converted to spoken English by mathAriaLabel(). Pass
1.3.1 Info and Relationships Semantic HTML throughout. Each view has exactly one visible <h1>. Answer choices use <button> elements. Multi-select uses aria-pressed. Pass
1.4.1 Use of Color Correct/wrong feedback uses both color change and injected text symbols (✓ / ✗) via CSS ::after pseudo-elements, announced by screen readers. Pass
1.4.3 Contrast (Minimum) All text/background pairings meet 4.5:1 ratio. Primary text on white: >7:1. Feedback states verified individually. Pass
1.4.10 Reflow Layout uses fluid containers, CSS Grid, and relative units. No horizontal scrolling at 320px viewport width. Pass
2.1.1 Keyboard All controls reachable by Tab. Physical keyboard numpad (0–9, Backspace, Enter) supported for numeric questions. No keyboard traps. Pass
2.2.1 Timing Adjustable Optional timer has no effect on scoring and can be hidden. No time limits are imposed. Pass
2.3.3 Animation from Interactions @media (prefers-reduced-motion: reduce) suppresses all CSS animations and transitions application-wide. Pass
2.4.2 Page Titled document.title updates per view: "Math Practice", "Choose topic – Math Practice", "Question – Math Practice", etc. Pass
2.4.7 Focus Visible 3px solid navy outline with 2px white offset on all :focus-visible elements, visible on both light and dark backgrounds. Pass
2.5.5 Target Size All interactive controls: min-height: 44px; min-width: 44px. Choice buttons: full-width, minimum 48px height. Pass
3.1.1 Language of Page <html lang="en"> Pass
4.1.3 Status Messages A visually hidden role="status" live region announces "Correct!" and "Not quite." without moving focus. Score summary announced at session end. Pass

Section 4

Automated Testing Results

Automated accessibility testing was performed using axe-core 4.9.1 via the axe DevTools browser extension in Google Chrome. The rule set covered WCAG 2.1 Level A and Level AA (wcag2a, wcag2aa, wcag21a, wcag21aa).

ViewViolationsPassesIncompleteDate
Home / profile selection 0 17 0 2026-08-09
Active session (mixed review) 0 17 0 2026-08-09
Weekly topic picker 0 17 0 2026-08-09

45 rules were inapplicable (audio/video captions, form-specific rules, table structure) and are not counted above.

Math Notation Accessibility

A key accessibility challenge in math education software is ensuring that mathematical notation is correctly spoken by screen readers. The application converts all rendered math symbols to plain spoken English before setting aria-label on question and answer elements:

Rendered TextScreen Reader Announcement
7 × 3 = ?"7 times 3 equals what"
56 ÷ 8 = ?"56 divided by 8 equals what"
6 × ___ = 42"6 times blank = 42"
3/8"3 eighths"
1/4"1 fourth"
Which fraction is greater: 3/4 or 2/4?"Which fraction is greater: 3 fourths or 2 fourths?"

Manual Testing Evidence

TestMethodResult
Keyboard-only navigation Tab through all interactive elements on each view Pass
Numeric entry via physical numpad Digits 0–9, Backspace, Enter on numeric questions Pass
Reduced motion Enable "Reduce Motion" in macOS Accessibility settings; confirmed all transitions suppressed Pass
320px viewport reflow Chrome DevTools device emulation at 320px width; no horizontal scroll observed Pass
Offline operation Network disabled via DevTools after first load; all features fully functional Pass
VoiceOver walkthrough (macOS) Full session with VoiceOver + keyboard Pending

Pending items do not represent known violations. They are planned verification steps that extend the existing automated evidence.
